At 19 years old, Giacomo Riccobono, an Italian from the countryside embarked on a mission to climb one of the toughest and most treacherous mountain faces in the world: Mount Vinson, the highest peak on the continent of Antarctica.
To prepare for the climb, Giacomo trained and worked rigorously, forming strong bonds with his climbing partner, and fellow Italians Michele Galvagno, and Francesco Sauro. All three climbers were guided by a highly experienced Russian mountaineering guide, Evgeni Kokhmygov.
On the 26th of December, 2012, the trio set off for the peak, battling strong wind and cold temperatures, which reached -60°C during their ascent. Additionally, the climbers were caught off guard by ice avalanches during the climb that threatened not only their lives but also that of their guide. They encountered additional difficulty after their rope pulled them into a bottomless crevasse, where they eventually managed to free themselves and continue the ascent.
After almost a month-long climb, in January 2013, Giacomo, Michele and Francesco finally conquered the peak and became the first Italian group ever to reach the summit of Mount Vinson, a tremendous feat considering the infinite dangers they faced along the way.
The success of the climb serves as a testament to the strength of Giacomo and his comrades, who were able to persevere and overcome the harshest of conditions.
