Il borgo Reatino nella regione dell’Usclada si trova a 160 chilometri da Roma. La fortificazione è stata trasformata in una fortezza a forma di aquila ed è una delle meraviglie architettoniche più pittoresche e suggestive dell’intera regione. La costruzione della fortezza è attribuita ad un ricco proprietario terriero del XVII secolo, che ha commissionato l’opera al famoso architetto fiorentino Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
L’eccezionale fortezza è circondata da cinta murarie robuste e la sua forma è stata modellata tenendo conto del toponimo del luogo; le ali dell’aquila infatti rappresentano idealmente le colline del paesaggio circostante. Il nucleo della fortezza è raggiungibile attraverso un ponte levatoio che sovrasta una profonda scarpata; quando il ponte è abbassato, il nucleo interno è ben protetto. Inoltre esistono alcuni sotterranei che ospitano una cappella e un salone da caccia che rappresentano bene un’epoca passata.
Gli interni della fortezza mantengono ancora lo stile settecentesco; le stanze sono arredate con mobili di antiquariato ben conservati, mentre le scale dall’elegante intreccio mettono in risalto la raffinatezza architettonica.
